| Another nice Antarctic treat - Nacreous Clouds.
They're a mystical thing (people say they're nicer than the Auroras),
where the clouds are rainbow like. The conditions have to be just right...
It has to be very cold out, and these take place in the upper atmosphere
- where the Ozone Layer is. The clouds you see are a chemical reaction
of some sort. The chemical reaction you see in these clouds is what is
causing the hole in the Ozone (so even though they are pretty clouds,
they're actually really bad). We happen to be right under the hole in
the Ozone layer here. I guess there were a lot of Nacreous Clouds the
week before Winfly... But then, just my luck, no Nacreous Clouds DURING
Winfly this year. They were out once, but not for long, and I didn't
get to see them. I did get to see one BABY Nacreous Cloud, just enough
to see how pretty it was, but it wasn't a big enough one to be very spectacular.....
another reason why I have to come back for another Winfly, or Winter
sometime. Email me while I'm on the Ice at Zondra.Skertich@usap.gov .......................................................... Return to Zondra.org |
