After only doing Summers so far, getting to see McMurdo in the dark was a treat. In the past two years, since I started coming down I'd never scene the sun go down. All of a sudden, it was dark out most of the time, with just a little sun during the day. The Winter-overers thought that seeing the sun was strange, while us Summer people thought the darkness was strange. When we first got here in August, it was dark quite most of the time. This photo was taken at 6:00 pm, just for reference. By the end of September, there was no real darkness anymore, just twilight during the middle of the night. James and I were very excited to see the darkness, and went hiking up Ob Hill on one of our first days here. It was about -60F with the windchill, and while we were climbing, some bad weather started moving in. We only made it up half way, and knew that the smart/safe thing to do was to turn around and go back. This is a view from where we got to.
