Up until Christmas we were landing airplanes
on the sea ice right in front of town... But as the heat of the summer
softens up the ice, the airport moves out and the Coast Guard Ice Breakers
come in... They cut this channel in from the edge of the ice, into town,
so that our fuel tanker and cargo vessel can get in. When I took this
photo from the helochopter, it was my first time seeing open water since
I've arrived in Antarctica |
